Exchange Programme
The student exchange programme is a great opportunity for exchange students to experience different knowledge, life, and culture in Thailand. It was initiated by the cooperation between Chiang Mai University and its partner universities. It aims to provide the prominent international programme at the undergraduate level as well as accept international students from around the world to study at Chiang Mai University.
Academic Calendar 2023– 2024
CMU has a TRIMESTER SYSTEM which consists of the first, the second, and the third (summer) semesters. Exchange students can choose either 1 semester or 1 academic year program. 1 Academic year includes the First and the Second Semester. They will join in with Thai and International students in classes taught in English.

Criteria
- GPA Requirement 2.50 on a scale of 4.00
- English Proficiency Qualifications:
- Native English Speakers: exempted from English proficiency requirements
- Non-Native English Speakers: must submit one of the following standard English language certificates
- IELTS: 5.0
- TOEFL: PBT/ITP: 500 (TOEFL ITP test must be conducted by the institution or centre accredited by the Institute of International Education (IEE)
- CBT: 173
- iBT: 61
- TOIEC: 600
Note : The test must not be taken for more than 2 years.

The Faculty of Engineering currently provides three international programs which are Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IEL), Information Systems and Network Engineering (ISNE) and Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Project Management (MEPE). Minimum and Maximum Course Load per Semester
- Maximum: 22 credits
- Minimum: 9 credits
Student Visa Application
All foreign students must apply for a Non-Immigrant Education Visa (Non-ED Visa) in order to study in Thailand. In the application form, the applicants are required to fill in the address of the Royal Thai Embassy/ Consulate they wish to submit their visa application. Chiang Mai International Engineering School will provide them with supporting documents for the visa application all of which will be sent to the student’s address provided in the application form.
When students enter Thailand with a Non-ED visa, they will be granted 90 days duration of stay and not 1 year. Approximately 60 days after their arrival in Thailand, or 30 days before their student visa expires, they are required to submit their passport to Chiang Mai International Engineering School in order to first check the expiration date of their visa. Then, the necessary documents will be prepared for the visa extension.
Please note that some students may be given a shorter visa extension than one year depending on each student’s registration history, passport validity, etc.
Exchange Programme Application Process
- Interested applicants must complete the application form and prepare the required documents to be nominated by the home institution.
- After considering the application by the host institution, the students will receive the offer of admission via email. They are required to accept/ decline/ defer the offer before the deadline.
- Once the students accept the offer, they will receive the instructions regarding the registration, accommodation, and visa from Chiang Mai International Engineering School via email.
Note: Please note that a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) must be submitted alongside the nomination in case the home institution is one of the partner universities.
Supporting Documents
- A nomination letter from the home institution
- A copy of the Memorandum of Understanding (for the home institution being a partner university of Chiang Mai University)
- An application form
- A statement of purpose (SOP)
- A reference letter from the academic advisor
- An official academic transcript
- An English proficiency score record (for non-native English speakers)
- A copy of the first page of the passport (The passport must be valid for at least 6 months before its expiry date.)
- A student’s photo on white background

Note: Please note that exchange students shall have private health insurance arranged before arrival in Thailand. They may submit it later after their admission to the Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University.
